The style of girl’s clothes right now are just too much for me to handle… soooo cute. I can’t get enough of those hairbow, leggings, and fun colors.  I’m no fashionista, but I’m having so much fun with having a girl and being able to dress her up in all these sweet styles.

Here’s where we’ve come from. (No offense, mother. I’m sure we were just the talk of the town in these radicool ensembles.)

Oh, and just for the record, i love playing dress-up when we are out on the town, but let’s keep it real… most days this is more like it.

I hope all of you get a chance to get at least one girl as you grow your family.

One thing my parents really stressed growing up was the concept of WORK.  Now I’m sure they think I’m a softy when it comes to discipline and that I let them get away with too much, but when it comes to working – I’m tough.   My three year old, Gage, is in charge of vacuuming all around Josie’s highchair and crumbs in the kitchen each morning.   He’s very thorough and I love how he has a good attitude about it.

Bonus, he just found one of her binkies that we can never find when it’s “night-night” time.

I just make sure when we plan our morning we don’t go have fun or run errands until toys are picked up and he has his little daily chores done.   He’s my awesome helper!

I remember watching my sister put on her mascara when I was young, stroke after stroke, wondering when I’d be able to wear it. Well, I’ve been blessed to have the stubbiest eyelashes on the planet and have made up for it by buying expensive mascaras and spending way too much time being inches away from the mirror.  To make it worse… I have a terrible nervous habit of picking it off (along with my eyelashes) about an hour or so before I go to bed or when I’m really focusing on something, I’ll look down only to see my lap covered in black specks.   When I was living at home my mom joked that we had pounds of mascara coated on the bottom of the carpet.

Alas, I found the perfect mascara that I haven’t strayed from in years.  Loreal Voluminous is my weapon, applied after a white wax-like layer that my mother-in-law introduced me to.

Embarrassingly here are my eyes in the morning.  I also need my eyebrows shaped in the worst way.  I wear waterproof so there are still remnants of it – but after my little system, wahlaa. I look somewhat normal.

I am loving my life as a mother of two crazy kids and a wife of an ultrasound tech living in sunny Arizona… but there was once a day when I competed with some of the most amazing athletes in the country.  I sometimes find myself wishing I could step back in time to when I competed in track and field, Division 1 athletics.  So I guess this post is for me and letting me share with you a part of my life that I am proud to have been a part of.  Here is a little highlight clip of some of the meets I competed in.

Aubry\’s Highlight Video

Keep in mind… I am working on getting it condensed to just a small clip.. for now i just posted the whole video on youtube.  Just start the movie at 5:20 and see the video portion and if you want to see my best jump it is at 2:37.  Thanks for caring.

A-hem, hi, I’m Aubry Startin.  I’m a picture fanatic and I would like to take you on a journey. A journey with your camera.  My whole purpose is to get you empowered with the knowledge and confidence to make your pictures pop, draw a tear, take you back in time, fill you with emotion, and/or just let you show off what a professional you can be.   I’m a self-proclaimed “professional” photographer – where I’ve had formal training, I owe most of it to workshops and just messing around on my own.

I use a digital SLR camera, those fancier looking ones where you can interchange the lens.  Now there is also the point and shoot kind, like those cute compact ones. Everything is automatic. You will still be able to learn and have fun with a point and shoot, yet, you are going to be limited in your control of how the picture comes out.  Now with the SLR cameras – YOU have the control.  You say what the mood is, how much light you want, what you want your focus to be, gives you so much more control to be creative.

I’d also like to say I am a natural light photographer, I almost never use a flash.  It takes away all the romance.

In my bag:

Canon 5d mark ii

EF 24-70mm f/2.8L

EF 50mm f/1.4

In your bag:

Hmm, I would say an affordable camera that would do the trick would be Canon’s xsi, or for a bump up I would go with Canon’s 40d or 50d.  This is the camera I used before my 5d. I really loved it and it can fire off shots faster than the xsi. So it could come to what you can afford.

The lens I would highly recommend is the 50 mm 1.8 ($100) or 1.4 ($350) this is where you get those lovely shots that have a lot of blur in the background.

I go with canon simply because it was the one that I got when I was in high school and then when cody worked at best buy in the camera department he preferred canon. That’s about it though, they are pretty much the same in price and quality.

Got all that?

Now for my post processing work I use photoshop cs4 (photoshop elements is less expensive and more user friendly), that is where the magic happens. that program is a beast, but for what we’ll be using it for you will learn to love it and become comfortable in no time. well, you’ll never be totally comfortable because it can make your head want to explode, but don’t be scared I’ll try to lead you along the best I know how.

Soooo. Get your camera, 50 mm lens, photoshop, a great deal of patience, some cute subjects, and let’s begin.
